In the 21st century, where lots of things change very fast and new things appear, from the architectural point of view, the word "Illuminate" would have more than just one literal meaning. From Perception and Communication class, I had an opportunity to look back on "illuminated." For instance, these are my illuminated objects,

among these, the bat and the ball would be just things to hit and throw, but at least to me, it has more than a meaning which reminds me the past of mine when two things were everything for me. Even if its real appearance would not be changed, the meaning of object would be changed and illuminated differently by the artist as time goes by. Like this, "illuminate" includes the meaning which is about some objects and unique meaning from the objects. In other words, it can have literal meaning and figurative meaning depends on point of views.
According to the definition of the web site, Merriam-Webster, "An idiom is a group of words which have a different meaning when used together from the one they would have if you took the meaning of each word separately." In other words, it is a meaning of phrase, not some kinds of combination of words to deliver one's ideas. Based on this thought, idiom is about delivering history, culture, and new generation. For example, stepped Pyramid, Ziggurat contains its enormous appearance with historical, religious, and cultural things which could be defined as "Idiom." Moreover, idiom exists in every cultures; for example, there is also an idiom in Korea that "If you want to make your son to be a better man, teach him how to hook a fish rather than fishing a fish for your son." As from different culture has idioms, it can be seen similar as I have already learned that Mesopotamia - China - Ohio - Teotihuacan have similar basic formulas such as circle line and curving lines of artificial mountain even if those areas are really far away from each other. Based on human beings' belief to God and historical events made them to share elements to build their owns. Blow is image of "Dolmen" in Korea which was built for lives of the higher class of people and had similar function with Pyramid as a tomb. "It is a term impossible to translate into any European language (Roth, 192)"

Above is Dolmen(Ko-In-Dol in Korean)

According to the text book "Understanding Architecture written by Leland M. Roth," the author explains that Commodity, Firmness, and Delight are the elements of architecture. Moreover, "Commodity" shows that how does the building function (Roth,11), "Firmness" is about structure, or how does the building stand up (Roth, 25), and "Delight" is for define space in architecture, seeing architecture, and for architectural acoustics, shape, and sound (Roth, 103).
As whoever you are, you need to have something to build space before start working on which means that there should be ideas. These ideas would be "Commodity, Firmness, and Delight" as Roth explained that these are necessary to meet a satisfaction of architectural structures. For example, as there would be strong supporting ideas to write a well-organized essay, there also should be well-combined elements commodity, firmness, and delight to build.

"Although the temple weathered away, other examples survive in part, because they had thick outer walls like those carved on the plaque" (Roth, 184). From the history class, we have been explored around Nile river area where the civilization started and offered benefits to Egypt with Nile river. Pyramid, which is made by Egyptians and very well-known architectural structure. It took more than 200 years to build. Pyramid represents that the importance of Egyptians' religious belief which emphasizes after life rather than real life. Therefore, they built the enormous architectural structure to store as many as goods for their after lives and to emphasize and deliver the importance of Pyramid. If it was built with different "Material" than stone, it was not as effective as we think about Pyramid. Most stepped Pyramid forms have a unique place where the God can take a rest and has "vertical connection" to communicate with God as four points meet at the top of Pyramid. Pyramids were built on desert and made with lots of stone blocks. If Pyramids were not built with stone, it already would be disappeared in the earth.

Finally, the meaning of "illuminate" can be seen differently depend on the author's purpose of creating and the time when the artifact be created. idiom can be easily understood based on historical events, background, and culture. However, it also can be seen similarly even if there is different historical and cultural ones. Commodity, Firmness, and Delight are the most important elements in architectural field because if one of these would not be satisfied, the artifact cannot meet the last purpose of itself. Material shows different shape of structures depend on regions because the environment offer different materials.
