The 14th Weekly Opus "Coming Full Circle"

~Wednesday, 6 May 2009

Community
Community refers organization or group in our lives. However, it can be defined a little bit different way of perspective by architectural perspective because as the basic intention of architecture is to provide a space for people where they can stay together. For example, there is an architecture for a person such as private space and for people such as public space. Therefore, an architecture works as a medium which ties people all together. "Architecture is something many people take for granted, moving through it and using it without a second thought (Roth, 3)."

Moticello tied all First year iarc students all together

Stewardship
The definition of stewardship means ability or talent for taking care of something or managing something. For example, instructors' stewardship are how to instruct students well and janitors' stewardship are how to maintain assigned place or building. In the field of architectural design, it can be an own style of architect designer. That is why there is not exactly same architectures if its design intent is not creating twins. Moreover, each person has his or her own way of thinking.
"In architecture as in all other operative arts, the end must direct the operation. The end is to build well. Well-building hath three conditions; Commoditie, Firmness, and Delight (Roth, 11)."

Innovation
There are a lot of Innovations in our daily life such as alarm clock, coffe maker, and vehicles. For the architectural design field, it can be re-modeling or applying new way of design characters. There would be many helpful material to accomplish innovation of design such as new material, technology, and industry revolution. "This has led to a change of emphasis from fashionablility to building usage and careful use of resources (Massey, 219)."

example of the use of "Horizontal" as a new material

Authenticity
In the field of architectural design, Authenticity could be seen like reasonable things. For example, is this a reasonable place for a person? or is this reasonable location of a particular artifact for a building? As a writer is delivering his or her own thought by writing article with reasonable supporting ideas, an architect is delivering his or her own design intents by building an architecture with reasonable materials, techniques, and so on. "A Gothic church has been remodeled as a hotel, with the restaurant on a newly constructed mezzanine to the right (Massey, 230)."
image scanned from Roth(textbook)-shows reasonable role of architecture

There are many terms which help to understand architecture and it has been re-defined by an architectural design student. Whatever the terms are, it is all about to tie people as a community with architectures. Stewardship is one of the important thing to concern to maximize the hidden potential possibilities of architectural design. Innovation will help to create better quality and advanced architecture, but it is necessary to have authenticity to accomplish any styles of design.

The 13th Weekly Opus '[Pair]ing down'

~Wednesday, 29 April 2009

Meditation/Celebration
In the field of architectural design, Meditation is one of the architectural element to put space under the category of personal space which means that Meditation could be about private space rather than public space. On the other hands, Celebration is treating as space for all. For example, in common personal house, living would be the example of Celebration where people can talk and spend time together. With this manner, Roth said, “When I built this chapel, I wanted to create a place of silence, of prayer, of peace and inner joy. The feeling of the sacred inspired our efforts (552).”
Light/Shadow
Light and Shadow are coming together in design even more in our daily lives. For example, When sun rises, there will be shadow if there is anything. As this example, it is important to consider about Light and Shadow in the field of design because it concludes whether one artifact or structure is well-done or not. Moreover, in Asian, especially in Korea, it is the key point to choose a house because there is a field about whether a house is constructed to have enough light if a house has "Light," it would bring good luck and health. "He absorbed the setting, and gradually, the new chapel formed itself in his mind, creating what he would call " a visual echo of the landscape (Roth, 551)."

Transpose/Juxtapose
Transpose and Juxtapose are well-known ideas in the field of architectural design. If you are going to build a place and you manipulated an idea or a part from the past of architecture to finish your work, it would be an example of Transpose because you utilize the idea of the past which is transposing the time. On the other hands, Juxtapose is about utilizing a concept or an idea of different time period together in an object. For example, the use of arch and lintel and post together for the gate of house would be the example. "In his 1949 essay 'Monumentality, Symbolism, and Style," he argued that it was not enough for a contemporary building simply "to be something and do something; it must also say something (Roth, 537)."

By Google .com "VENTURI HOUSE"
Literal/Abstract
Literal and Abstract are the concepts which I have been asking to think and create something based on the Literal and Abstract. By literal, something can be seen and understood by viewers whatever they see. However, as I believe, abstract is about putting a concept and an idea of designer on the artifact. Therefore, an artifact can be understood by viewers with different ways of designer's intent. "...the building form is shaped by the music,...(Roth, 554)."
By Google.com "CHILEHAUS"
Monologue/Dialogue
Monologue is spoken by a person. Dialogue is spoken by more than a person. In the field of architectural design, these two prompts could be spoken by following examples. First, if an architecture can be spoken by itself, it would be an example of Monologue. Second, if an architecture is speaking with the built-in environment or nature of its surrounding, it would be an example of Dialogue. "Glass, bare bricks and concrete make the carpet appear an island (Massey, 148)."

above is an example of Monologue

above is an example of Dialogue

Finally, this 13th weekly opus is about pairing down. To show pairing, it needs to be started with concept which could be literal ore abstract. Along with, there would be some kinds of techniques such as light and shadow, meditation and celebration, transpose and juxtapose, and monologue and dialogue. These are needed to be maximize the intent of architect designer.

The 12th Weekly Opus "Action verbs"

~Wednesday, 22 April 2009

Speculate
It means that thinking deeply or guessing which are needed on the way of creating or designing. Speculating the past shapes the future and gives the new ways of design. It is a by-product of speculation to have new materials and to have further developed designs or ideas. From the entire process of design, speculation comes first because it is necessary to fully and correctly understand the purpose of clients or the main concept. "Since the dawn of human symbolic thinking, architecture not only has provided utilitarian shelter but also has silently expressed how humans view themselves...(Roth, 519)."

main concept of Fallingwater, harmony between nature and man-made structure, was speculated by Wright

Compose
In the field of architectural design, compose or composition is a necessary element to unify each elements to create a whole. Compose could be considered as the final step of a procedure of designing. All design has composition and need to be well-composed to maximize and fulfill commodity, firmness, and delight. "Together let us desire, conceive, and create the new structure of the future, which will embrace architecture and sculpture and painting in one unity...(Roth, 523)."
Energize
Along with the revolution such as technology and industry, one of the outstanding elements of 20th century's architecture would be the development of the machine because even if there was a kind of claim whether the use of machine is good or not, the apparent fact is the use of machine brought the variety of design. In other words, it brought the energy to architecture and design. According to the textbook, "German designers attempted to adapt to the needs of industry but Le Corbusier reversed the process by using machine production as an inspiration for his 'one-off' commissions (Massey 80)."

Shape
In the field of architectural design, shape is a right next step of speculate because before doing something with materials, it is necessary to shape the idea in the imaginary space. Moreover, the shape shapes overall shape of a building, artifact, or structure. As an architectural design student, it is my obligation to shape the architectural field by utilizing new material and so on. "In the 1930s Wright continued to develop his own personal style which he considered more expressive of American values, (Massey, 85)."

Fallingwater became the root of American architecture which shapes American style

Stretch
Stretch is about push yourself to further way to develop and maximize one's concept and idea. In the architectural field, it is important to follow the interest of most people because it is the way of shortening time, budget, and manipulate the assigned space. Stretching is the most effective way of design to maximize the need. "When Modern Movement principles began to affect Scandinavian design around 1930 there was still a strong craft tradition in existence (Massey, 86)"

the use of "horizontal element" stretched

In order to build a well-composed building or city, you need to speculate deeply to stretch your ideas, concepts, and characters on a particular parts of building or area of a city. It needs to be well-composed to energize the main goal of these project which could shape a building or a city with action verbs such as speculate, compose, energize, shape, and stretch.

The 11th Weekly Opus "Road Trip"

~Wednesday, 15 April 2009
Roots
Root seems like a kind of own style in the field of architectural design. For example, Pyramid is treating as a Root of architecture because I also begun to learn about history of architecture from Pyramid of Egypt. There is an example of root for history of American architecture that is Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. I think that Wright's Fallingwater is the root of American architecture, too. It shows that the harmony between nature and man-made structure and also harmony is the most important point for architecture over the world. Along the Arts and Crafts Movement, Americans could figure the root of history of American architecture. According to the textbook, Massey states that “The Arts and Crafts Movement had widened the debate about what constituted good design,... (31)."

Congruence
In architectural field, there are lots of attempt to accomplish the potential possibilities of architectural design. Among these, congruence would be one of the most important potential possibilities because architecture is all about "find out" the congruence as utilizing architectural elements. According to the textbook, "Both von Klenze's and Schinkel's galleries used reek details selectively, in buildings whose plans arose from a detailed analysis of contemporary functional requirements (Roth, 475)."

Above Image is an Example of "Congruence" between architecture and nature

Concept
For architecture, concept is representing the purpose of every buildings. For example, the concept of museum would be display and keeping artifacts, cafeteria would have a concept as a space for eating, and classroom need to be constructed to accomplish the concept of studying. Therefore, as an architect designer, it is extremely recommended to keep in mind the concept of each work to be seen better. There is an example of concept from the textbook. "focused on the elaborate staircase, which provides the perfect stage on which the operagoer can parade and exchange greetings (Roth, 483)."
Fallingwater is built for personal housing.

Materiality
Materiality helps spiritual thing to be physical thing; in other words, various kinds of materials helped to build Fallingwater and Monticello. As colors play huge role, materials also work as key element of architectures. It depends on how to apply materiality to build architectures because Fallingwater was built with stones and on stones itself. Therefore, it is able to have stronger intention on Fallingwater itself. "the greatest possible work is done by the least amount of material (Roth, 489)."

Compression : Release
Compression and Release could be seen like Limit and Free because compression is tying something together and release is to let something be free. Therefore, to find something in the field of architecture, light source would be the example in architecture because it shows two distinct effects on buildings. For example, Fallingwater and Monticello could be examples of compression : release which show the use of light source. In Fallingwater, dark hallway and bright private room. In Monticello, use of lots of windows on it. Moreover, the location of these two great architectures show compression : release because Monticello is located on the top of the hill and Fallingwater is located in the forest. “Built on a rocky hillside, the concrete structure cantilevers over a waterfall(Massey, 85).”

To sum up, this week's weekly opus project can be defined by Road Trip because I visited architectures which are the root of modern architecture of American. Also, these have congruence, materiality, and compression ; release as those concepts. As it was a really awesome experience for me, I hope that there would be a kind of landmark able architecture under my career.

The 10th Weekly Opus "Between Silence + Light"

~Wednesday, 8 April 2009
Craft
As I have been exploring, there are lots of ways to express a well-done artifact. Among those, craft is real character to determine whether an artifact is well-done or not. It can be a way to observe the designer's own style through craftsmanship and it needs practice to make perfect. From history, there was a movement of Arts and Crafts Movement which emphasize the importance of craftsmanship throughout architectural design. "The Arts and Crafts Movement had widened the bebate about what constituted good design,... (Massey, 31)."

Public/Private
To architectural design, it is important to utilize both public and private. Therefore, there are lots of architectures which are focused on balance between public and private. Monticello and Fallingwater would be good example of utilizing public and private on architectural spaces. Monticello had both private chamber and guest chamber for 5o guests. In addition, Fallingwater's private is well-constructed and space for guest was constructed as a separated house which is connected by pathway. "The creation of this public museum was the logical extension of practice in the preceding century, when, under the influence of the philosophes, enlightened European monarchs and princes had been opening their residences to the public so that their collections of painting and sculpture could be viewed and studied (Roth, 472)."

Fallingwater includes Public and Private spaces.

Technique
Technique is a key element which opened the possibilities of new style and generation of architecture. As it can be proved by history, technology (technique) enhanced the architecture and life level of human beings. Technique allows to accomplish a maximized possibilities. For example, when two people are going to make artifacts with same material, technique would be the key to determine the better one. "There arose building needs that had never existed before, leaving architects perplexed just how to design the required structure (Roth, 486)."

Example of use of technique from Google.com

Language
In the planet where we are living, there are lots of languages. Basically, language is a way of expressing of one's. In architectural design field, language would be more various than literal meaning of language which is used to speak and write. Language of architectural design is telling us the style and concepts of designs. "One of the major shifts that occurred in the nineteenth century was the need to design building function that had never existed before,...(Roth, 471)."

Virtual
Virtual can be defined by eclecticism because virtual means that it is easily accept something. According to Roth, "the informed and selective borrowing of historical building forms and details, rooted...can be viewed as developing in a series of sequential related phases extending all the way (Roth, 469)." In other words, it is a harmony of material and technique throughout history.

Example image of virtual from Google.com

In order to have well-crafted artifact, there would be proper technique which is able to deliver designer's concept to viewers with various ways of language of designer's. In addition, it would be decided by virtual dealing with public and private facets to accomplish the essential concepts.

The 9th Weekly Opus "[Re]action"

~Wednesday, 1 April 2009

Rotation
The literal meaning of rotation could be defined as circulation because it is about re-use and repeating something. A word "rotation" has an important meaning to architect-designers because it has relationship between the past and the future of architectural designing. In other words, it works as a transition or mirror to observe the pattern of architectural design history. For example, the simplicity and the splendor of design shaped a country's style. Along with improvement of ornaments and trends of ornaments, a country's own design style would be finished. “The naturalistic forms of Morris’s surface patterns and japonisme were among the inspirations of the first great design style of the twentieth century, Art Nouveau (Massey, 29). "

Movement
In architectural design, "movement" has been working as a main feature of architectural design which creates a new one and leads new style. For example, glass and iron leaded a new style of architecture in the past. In addition, it is essential element when an architect-designer is going to deal with space. It is not possible to think about movement without space because wherever a person exist, there is space. “The chimneypiece was the focal point of the Early Georgian interior, and considerable attention was lavished on it in terms of the ornamentation of the architectural elements as well as its position in the room (Blakemore 260) ."

Reflection
Reflection would be a good feature to improve quality of design. For example, if an architect-designer is going to renovate a particular space, he or she will reflect previous architect-designer's work on the further version of space because it will help to correct mistakes of previous one and help to make better quality of space based on use of reflection. According to the textbook, Massey mentions that “American interior design, however, was profoundly influenced by the reforming ethics and naturalistic style of Morris and his followers, which chimed with the frontier spirit and sense of individualism that were growing stronger as American began to establish a national identity in design (Massey, 19)."
Image of "Hall of Mirror" from flickr.com

Source
There would be lots of kinds of sources such as written sources, which are book, and physical sources, which are building. Throughout this week's history lecture, it has been noticed that Americans took English as sources of design. Therefore, there are some similarity between American and English. In addition, the use of glass and iron worked as new source of architectural design which opened a new style of architectural design generation. From the textbook, the author says that "He warned against the common practice of making one material look like another, and the effort to create a new style when Gothic could not be surpassed (Massey, 10)."

+

+

Illumination
Illumination is about how to light source for particular things to let it has more powerful sense to express potential possibilities. Illumination was used as a source during the industrial revolution. It is significant to be able to use illumination on his or her artifact to make it has stronger power. According to the textbook illumination translated in a little different way, "However all-persuasive the Victorian middle-class desire to express comfort and wealth, the aesthetic standard of the interior disturbed contemporary critics, and a large body of writing appeared during the nineteenth century to give advice on taste and interior design (Massey, 8)." Image of 'Hagia Sophia" from flickr.com

This 9th weekly opus prompts are all related to [Re]action and all have dynamic meanings. These prompts are about which comes first to create better quality of design. To reach an unchangeable goal of architectural design, architect-designers need to be familiar with utilizing sources as rotating them, move them, reflecting them, and illuminate them to create a new generation of style.

The 8th Weekly Opus project "grammar : syntax"

~Wednesday, 25 March 2009

[Re]visions
[Re]vision could be about interpretation, translating, and seeing and would be understood as a new trend and also could be a kind of guideline which includes styles, techniques, and so on for following generations to accomplish better quality of architectural designs. However, vision would be seen differently as different people voice different opinions. As a student, who is training to learn how to express one's ideas and thoughts within common and regulated methods, there would be various ways of vision. For example, in my program at UNC-Greensboro, I have been asking to do projects which is related previous projects; in other words, it is about revision as historical events happened up to today. For example, among various architectural features from history, Greek orders are being used. Michelangelo's "David" revised by Bernini. According to Roth from textbook, "Baroque architecture could be described as a celebration of absolutism (Roth 420)."

Audience
Audience means that one designer would do his or her best to show their artifacts to audience. For example, audience for class would be students and audience for baseball game would be fans. It is very important to keep in mind the audience throughout the entire process of creating architectural designs. In other words, every building was built with the audience of it as churches from history were the place to visited. “A broad space was needed to accommodate the crowds who gather at Easter (Roth 408). "

Character
Pyramid is the triangular shape and Dome represents the harmony. With these two examples of character, character is about a symbol and distinguishing features. In the field of architectural design, the most important thing is character which distinguishes one from another. For example, an architectural designer has his or her own character in designing which make this architectural designer popular, famous, and unique. As a student, it is significant thing to develop the own character. “The character of the Parisian style is epitomized in the interior of the Salon de Princesse of the Hotel de Soubise…,(Roth 430)."

Transition
Transition is the thing that you can utilize to connect A to B or to transform A to B. Transition is a part of all, not a separated thing of all. Some examples could be found from history such as Portico and Staircase. "His later staircase, providing entrance into his library at San Lorenzo (Roth 381)." Staircase used for transition between outside of library, where people have some questions, and inside of library, where people get answers what they had at the outside of library.

Datum
For an architectural designer, datum would be considered as ideas, sources, and also how to utilize these datum. For example, when you are going to have a presentation with lots of different size of images, you need to make sure for all datum lines of images and sizes to have strong sense of utilizing datum. For an architectural designer, datum would be considered as ideas, sources, and also how to utilize these datum. For example, when you are going to have a presentation with lots of different size of images, you need to make sure for all datum lines of images and sizes to have strong sense of utilizing datum. “It’s the great disgrace of our age that, although it has before it such beautiful ideas and such perfect rules in venerable, old building, none the less it allows the whim of a few artists who wish to break away from the antique to bring architecture back to barbarism (Roth 397)."

This week's prompts seems like to show revolution which is circulation. Revolution includes a continuous flow of rotation, cycle, reform, renaissance, and revival. These are prompts of revolution. To a person who is learning how to utilizing Datum, at the same time, it would help to have stronger sense of design with utilizing Revision, to deliver his or her own Character of design to Audience with well-developed Transition.

The 7th Weekly Opus "P week"

~on Wednesday, 18 March 2009

Periphery
Periphery has a meaning of surrounding of area as distinguished from its internal space or center. Moreover, it can be defined with large space and small space. For example, periphery for Empire State building would be sidewalks around it. St.Peter's contains entire city as perphery. The emphasis on periphery in architectural field and designing industries would be unlimited because it is as important as its main. In other words, a artifact could have stronger impact with well-combined periphery with the main. "He and Sixtus V proposed cutting a new street, the Strada Felice, from the Piazza del Popolo straight through the center of the ruins of the old city, .....the intersection of the four fountains were created (Roth, 414)."

Below is an example of well-balanced drawing with main and periphery.

Portfolio
Portfolio is a storage of ideas and works. Portfolio is one of the most important part for a person who is doing creative activity. It is a method of keeping works and there are two main categories under portfolio such as soft version and hard version. The soft version means some kinds of electronic things such as online blog and computer files. The hard copy indicates that physical things such as drawings, drafting, and crafting.

Above is an example a kind of physical portfolio.

Process
Process is more important than the result because there would not be any good results without good processes. For example from architectural field, it is very important step to stack stone bricks carefully to build stone bridge. In addition, process can be seen with some various steps. For example, a person needs to make an artifact which is inspired by assigned design word; therefore, he or she is starting to think about the literal definition of assigned word to make an artifact rather than start to think from the figurative meaning of assigned word because throughout the literal meaning of a object, it would be easier to approach a destination.

Perspective
Perspective is being used to trick real things on two dimensional because it help viewers to recognize objects in drawing easier. Perspective is one of techniques to emphasize spatial space of three dimensional to two dimensional and help to view with horizontal line(eye level), Ground line(foot level), and vanishing point. There are one point, two points, and three points in perspective drawings.

Professional
Professional means that a person who is ready to show his or her talent as a pro with well-developed and well-educated knowledge. It is important to show professional manner through works such as in presentation, with well-finished, and so on. It is not only necessary showing professional through works, but also it is necessary having professionalism to be a real pro in everyday life because you are the person who created your artifacts.

Above is picture of Alexander Julian who is professional designer.

To be a pro, it is necessary to have well-developed, well-done, and well-organized Portfolio which shows main object and Periphery. Moreover, it is also necessary to have various points of views such as Perspective because there would be something which we cannot see it from a point of view. To meet these, it does not excess to put more emphasis on Process to get better outcome.
