The 9th Weekly Opus "[Re]action"

~Wednesday, 1 April 2009

Rotation
The literal meaning of rotation could be defined as circulation because it is about re-use and repeating something. A word "rotation" has an important meaning to architect-designers because it has relationship between the past and the future of architectural designing. In other words, it works as a transition or mirror to observe the pattern of architectural design history. For example, the simplicity and the splendor of design shaped a country's style. Along with improvement of ornaments and trends of ornaments, a country's own design style would be finished. “The naturalistic forms of Morris’s surface patterns and japonisme were among the inspirations of the first great design style of the twentieth century, Art Nouveau (Massey, 29). "

Movement
In architectural design, "movement" has been working as a main feature of architectural design which creates a new one and leads new style. For example, glass and iron leaded a new style of architecture in the past. In addition, it is essential element when an architect-designer is going to deal with space. It is not possible to think about movement without space because wherever a person exist, there is space. “The chimneypiece was the focal point of the Early Georgian interior, and considerable attention was lavished on it in terms of the ornamentation of the architectural elements as well as its position in the room (Blakemore 260) ."

Reflection
Reflection would be a good feature to improve quality of design. For example, if an architect-designer is going to renovate a particular space, he or she will reflect previous architect-designer's work on the further version of space because it will help to correct mistakes of previous one and help to make better quality of space based on use of reflection. According to the textbook, Massey mentions that “American interior design, however, was profoundly influenced by the reforming ethics and naturalistic style of Morris and his followers, which chimed with the frontier spirit and sense of individualism that were growing stronger as American began to establish a national identity in design (Massey, 19)."

Source
There would be lots of kinds of sources such as written sources, which are book, and physical sources, which are building. Throughout this week's history lecture, it has been noticed that Americans took English as sources of design. Therefore, there are some similarity between American and English. In addition, the use of glass and iron worked as new source of architectural design which opened a new style of architectural design generation. From the textbook, the author says that "He warned against the common practice of making one material look like another, and the effort to create a new style when Gothic could not be surpassed (Massey, 10)."

Illumination
Illumination is about how to light source for particular things to let it has more powerful sense to express potential possibilities. Illumination was used as a source during the industrial revolution. It is significant to be able to use illumination on his or her artifact to make it has stronger power. According to the textbook illumination translated in a little different way, "However all-persuasive the Victorian middle-class desire to express comfort and wealth, the aesthetic standard of the interior disturbed contemporary critics, and a large body of writing appeared during the nineteenth century to give advice on taste and interior design (Massey, 8)." This 9th weekly opus prompts are all related to [Re]action and all have dynamic meanings. These prompts are about which comes first to create better quality of design. To reach an unchangeable goal of architectural design, architect-designers need to be familiar with utilizing sources as rotating them, move them, reflecting them, and illuminate them to create a new generation of style.
