The 5th Weekly Opus "Voices"

~Wednesday, 25 February 2009

Presence: "In the new phase into which medieval architecture now passed, the presence of light, the symbol of God's divine Grace, became the preeminent symbol (Roth, 323)." This prompt means that a particular state or fact of being present. As people learn lessons from the past, it is as important as to concern about the presence because if the presence will not be concerned as much as, there would no new types of architectural structures. Our entourages of common daily life (presence) would be inspired by tomorrow's architectural designers'. From the perspective of architectural field, it needs to be emphasized the importance of the presence because when we look back history, there were lots of things were inspired by people who lived latter generation. For example, Greek orders have been using for a long time until today. There is a similar concept from the textbook. The past architecture helps the interpretation and understanding the situation of social life.

Precedent: "Many later innovations in European castle design were inspired in part by what the Crusaders saw of the fortifications around Constantinople (Roth, 307)." Something already existed or has been existing. It would contain lots of different types of examples to meet the meaning of "Precedent." For example, Ziggurat, Pyramid, Brooklyn Bridge would be the examples of "Precedent." It does not matter whether it is well-known or not. Precedent would be the footsteps of architectural history which shows what happened and what will happen. Inspiration...would be an example of utilizing precedent to create an artifact or an architecture, which helps creating actions. As an example from history,

Moments: Usually, "Moment" represent the present time or a part of time. However, it could be any other particular time whether from the past or the present. For example, if someone takes a picture when you are meeting with your friend on the street, it could be an example of moment. Also, it can be any scene from your memory of life such as swimming in the pool, watching a movie, and reading a book. Moments could be divided by 9 categories such as Boundary, Positive and Negative space, Rhythm, Balance, Symmetry, Contrast, Gradient, hierarchy, and Proximity. In other words, these nine words would be the standard to create better-designed artifact or architecture. Even if one of these nine design words was used for a particular thing, there would be one or more design words found from the particular thing; for example, my assigned design word was Symmetry, but I could see more design words from mine.

Duality: Duality seems like to include the meaning of literal and figurative such as more, several, and multi-. For instance, + and -, High and Low, Front and Back, Eating and Playing and so on. According to the textbook, "They combined aspects of a modern health club with that of a public library and school, for the biggest baths such as the Baths of Caracalla in Rome (Roth, 267)." For example, the Passageway project can be an example of Duality because it needed to be done based on the fairy tale, which has two characters, one is rich(Black) and the other is poor(White) and design words(Symmetry).

Metric: According to the handout, "bath of the diocletian: 289 A.D.", "metric of a bath, linked by water but seperated into the caldarium, tepidarium, and frigidarium."
It is a method of measurement. It creates various scales depends on how and which metrics. For instances, utilizing scales such as 1/2":1'-0", 1/4":1'-0", 1/16":1'-0" and so on to craft and to drawing plan, sections, and elevations. To deal well with these metric systems, it is important to approach mathematically.

Finally, emphasis on the correlation of this week's prompts are really helpful to recognize the real meaning of architecture which is an action to create space, cultural, shaping human beings. As a person who wants to be an architectural designer, to do the best now (presence), look back the footsteps (precedent) to create moment of history with duality as utilizing proper metric system to deliver the concepts. This is a sentence to wrap this week's opus entry.
