The 6th Weekly Opus "macro to micro"

~Wednesday, 4 March 2009
Composition
It is a way of organize for the artifacts; in other words, how to put or locate the materials to make one's better one and let the audience understand easier. Especially, in the field of architecture, it is directly related to the structural integrity if one architecture does not have a well-done composition as dome shaped architectures shows well-composed structure. Here is an example from the textbook, "Brunelleschi then took the egg and gently crushing the shell against the slab, made the egg stand up (Roth, 357)"

Porch : Court : Hearth
These three terms were used as a formula of Greek buildings to create a enormous temple.
In the textbook, porch is "A covered or roofed entrance to a building, often employing columns to support the roof (629)." Therefore, porch is a kind of transition between outside and inside.
Court can be compared with today's living room where people gather together or open space for gathering each other. Hearth represents the most important space like today's master room. It was a place where altar is for worship.

Diagram
Basically, it starts with points and line before forming diagram. In architectural field, diagrams can be used to survey three dimensional things to two dimension. For example, diagrams are being used for plan, section, and elevation to re-form three dimension on two dimension. Also, it can be a useful method to understand something without using language. In other words, it is a language for architectural field. "He also described how the ideal Platonic Phileban shapes, the square and the circle, are incorporated in the proportions of the human body (Roth, 359)."

Impression
It is about a way of expression of people. For example, when you meet someone for the first time, you will have a impression right after meeting; moreover, it would have similar meaning whit inspiration which gives people emotional things. In the architectural field, various elements such as scale, light, and material and so on are used to deliver impression through the architectures. "A dome, placed over the center, became the outward manifestation of this centrally focused plan (Roth, 365)."

Detail
It is the most important thing to an architectural designer. However, it would have various meaning like literally and figuratively. For example, a person is going to draw a Cathedral. He or she can concentrate on a ceiling to draw or its outstanding overall view.
Therefore, detail is an invisible technique to illustrate architectures. "The solution worked out in the nave was unique (Roth, 319)."

This week's prompts would be compared with Zoom-in and out as the title is "Macro to Micro." For the overall shape of this week's Opus, well- detailed composition with various kinds of diagrams to deliver impressions of architecture which has three parts such as Porch : Court : Hearth where people come in and out and gathering for the most important place (Hearth) among these three places. These prompts are related to human beings who is the main element of every architectural behaviors such as building, constructing, and so on.
